White Pages Semantic Web Style

November 1st, 2007

foafRadiux now lists more than 66 Million white page records that include an FoaF file for each record.

FoaF is an acronym for Friend of a Friend, an experimental project and vocabulary for the Semantic Web. The Friend of a Friend project is creating a Web of machine-readable pages describing people, the links between them and the things they create and do.

FoaF is about a person’s place in the Web, and the Web’s place in the world. It is a simple technology that makes it easier to share and use information about people and their activities (calendars, weblogs, photos etc.), to exchange information between Web sites, and to automatically extend, merge and re-use it online.

The goal for the Radiux semantic web style White Pages is to provide reliable, valuable online connections between individuals. Participants will have to verify their entries using more than just a free email account.

Printed Whitepages about to die

October 28th, 2007

The utilities commission requires phone providers to deliver a directory once every year. But in the light of the Internet phone companies want to change that requirement so that it is only required to “publish” the listings. AT&T Inc. said last month it wants to try delivering its White Pages online rather than on front porches, noting the effort could save 4 million pounds of paper per year in two North Carolina test cities. AT&T’s internal research showed that customers rarely use the White Pages as they increasingly turn to the Internet for basic phone listings. Bob Bennink, the general counsel for the North Carolina Utilities Commission, said the agency will consider the issue at a mid-October meeting.

But you don’t have to wait for the old Bell to make a move on Radiux.com you can already search more than 66 Million white page records and get better results than from any other people search application.

2.25 Mio. Painters in San Diego?

October 23rd, 2007

One has to wonder … - if you thing your beach house on San Diego’s shores could need a new color and you Google for ’san diego painter’ the search engine will provide you with 2.25 million of these (according to its own account). The question is: how useful is this really? the obvious answer: NOT AT ALL! Even Google’s so-called ‘local results’ are actually no help at all - containing the web sites of the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego Patent Information and San Diego County Library Law. One more reason why Radiux is changing the search engine landscape ..

Fighting Online Junk

October 1st, 2007

The Internet’s biggest attraction is also its largest short-coming: ANYBODY can publish ANYTHING, almost everywhere. The Internet is cluttered with SPAM sites and fake online identities. Anybody with a free email account can create a user at any of the popular services like YouTube, MySpace and Orkut. Although these websites claim to have millions of users, the realty is that most of these user accounts are probably set up for reasons other than using the services promoted by these sites.

MySpace has made plenty of news as a popular child predator online hang-out. And Facebook, who tried to differentiate itself by claiming that youngsters there are safer from sexual predators, is facing scrutiny from New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who subpoenaed Facebook after he said the company did not respond to “many” complaints by investigators who were solicited for sex while posing as 12- to 14-year-olds on the site.

Developers of Radiux believe that the future of the Internet will be determined by online services whose users that can be held accountable for information they provide online.

Radiux and Web 3.0

September 1st, 2007

Just as the term "Web 2.0" enters into the mainstream, the brains behind the World Wide Web are introducing pieces of the ‘Semantic Web’ which may end up being called Web 3.0.

The term ‘Web 2.0′ decribes an Internet that is even more interactive, customized, social and media-intensive than the one of a decade ago.

"Twenty years from now, we’ll look back and say this was the embryonic period," said Tim Berners-Lee, who established the main principles that guide the Web in 1989 with colleagues at CERN, the European science institute.

Berners-Lee and others are working on the the semantic web which is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which web content can be expressed not only in natural language, but also in a format that can be read and used by software agents (bots and spiders), thus permitting them to find, share and integrate information more easily.

At its core, the semantic web comprises a philosophy, a set of design principles, collaborative working groups, and a variety of enabling technologies. Some elements of the semantic web are expressed as prospective future possibilities that have yet to be implemented or realized. Other elements of the semantic web are expressed in formal specifications.

Radiux develoeprs are following the development very closely and have already integrated several ‘Web 3.’ standards into the directory systems of Radiux.com.

The Decline of the Yellow Pages

August 21st, 2007

Unlike Radiux, online yellow page services have been on a steady downwards spiral since the beginning of 2006. Sites like yellowpages.com, and superpages.com lost half of the traffic they used to have. The main reason for this trend is the ongoing neglection  of  search engine  patterns (or better: algorithm). Since search engines drive the majority of online traffic - and of course searches, online directories that do not follow search engine trends will eventually end up in indifference. Read more

Google meets eBay at Craigslist

July 30th, 2007

The homepages of Google, eBay and Craigslist are among the most visited web sites on the Internet. A lot of people thought it would be a great idea to be able to search all these sites from just one single start page. At Radiux.com users can now equip their search box not only with these functions but also add WikiPedia, Amazon and other services to his or her individual search box.
